Top 50 Auto Mechanic Programs BadgeMaybe you’ve got that entrepreneurial spirit and always wanted to open your own auto shop. Maybe you’ve always had a knack for how everything works under the hood of a car and instead of giving away free advice, you’re ready to get paid for your skills. Or, maybe you’re just tired of earning minimum wage and looking for a career change altogether. Whatever career goals have led you to consider pursuing an associate’s degree in automotive technology, it’s a wise decision. But, if you want a dealership to take more than just a passing glance at your resume, you’re going to need some solid automotive training and industry certification too.

While you know that an automotive technology degree is a key to unlocking your career goals, you’re still probably grappling with the same question – which degree program do you choose? You’ve likely been scanning the internet looking for a reputable school with all the major highlights . . . a nationally-recognized program, strong ties to the local automotive community, one that offers an affordable tuition and helps put you into the job of your dreams. And, with such a large selection of automotive degree and certificate programs available to you, selecting a school can be very overwhelming.

We’ve tried to simplify that daunting task for you by assessing the quality of the automotive degree and certificate programs nationwide. We looked at every school in the United States that holds accreditation with the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). Our goal was to provide prospective students with the most relevant, up-to-date information that would help them find the automotive degree program ideally suited to their needs.

Of course, any program accredited by the NATEF is going to include courses covering the eight core areas of ASE certification: Engine repair, automatic transmission and transaxle, manual drive train and axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical/electronic systems, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, and engine performance. But, we know that there’s more than that to an all-around, comprehensive educational experience. So, we took our analysis a step further and looked for colleges that offered things like:

Selection Criteria

  • NATEF accredited
  • An internship experience
  • Extensive campus shop practice time
  • Job placement assistance
  • Awards/recognition received from local/national industry organizations
  • ASE certification preparation course
  • Supplemental certificate programs

Our picks were chosen entirely on the quality of the school and the programs that they offer. So, here you will find the results of our search – our top picks for the best associate degree program in automotive technology in each state.

In 2016, Continental Auto Group announced a joint venture in which the auto group opened an up registered apprenticeship program for automotive technicians at UAA.  Of course, such a big announcement caught our attention and made us look twice at this school.  What’s really unique about this agreement is that UAA is the only college in Alaska to enter into a Registered Apprenticeship College Consortium (RACC) program, which not only highlights UAA’s commitment to high standards but also further reinforces the quality education automotive students can expect to receive.

The automotive technology program at UAA is designed to help students develop the skills needed to diagnose and repair today’s complex vehicles.  By combining classroom teaching of core automotive fundamentals with an intensive hands-on practical experience, automotive students receive an all-around, comprehensive technical education that prepares them for success.  The degree and certificate program are both available in two tracks – General Automotive or GM ASEP.

The GM ASEP program is highly selective, and enrollment is only available in even-numbered years.  Students attend classroom lecture for first the 10 weeks of the semester and then participate in a full-time, paid internship at their sponsoring dealership for the balance of the semester.  As a stipulation of enrollment, students are required to secure employment/sponsorship at a local GM dealership.

• Accredited by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF)
• Tuition/Fees: $175/credit hour (in-state), $ 622/credit hour (out-of-state)

As the recipient of the 2018 School of the Year Award from Tomorrow’s Technician, an industry magazine, Arapahoe Community College (ACC) certainly caught our attention. Of course, it didn’t go unnoticed how well-connected ACC’s automotive service technology program is to the major auto manufacturers.

The Automotive Service Technology degree program is divided into five specific tracts:
• ATEC – general apprenticeship for professional automotive technicians
• ASEP – General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program
• CAP – Chrysler College Apprenticeship Program
• Nissan – Nissan Denver Technician Apprenticeship Program
• PACT – Professional Automotive Career Training (Honda)

At ACC, students are required to maintain an apprentice position for the duration of the two-year program. Those following the ATEC tract can complete their apprenticeship in any dealership or repair facility. Students enrolled in one of the corporate-sponsored ASEP, CAP, Nissan, or PACT tracts are required to apprentice in a manufacturer dealership of that specific brand. ACC provides placement assistance to ensure that all students secure an apprenticeship prior to the start of the program. This brand-specific apprentice program is unique to ACC and gives students more control over their career and offers them the flexibility to specialize in the brand that interests them most.

ACC’s program is well-recognized in industry circles, and as such, has been the beneficiary of many lucrative industry donations. Dodge, GM, Jeep, Honda, and Nissan have all donated vehicles to the campus shop. The Chrysler Foundation and Nissan North America have provided funding grants, while the Nissan North America Technical Training Department has donated nearly $20,000 to the automotive training program at ACC.

And, for students who want to add a little extra to their skill set, it’s worth noting that the college also offers certificate programs in maintenance and light repair, service management, and advanced electronics.

What really stands out about Bluegrass Community Technical College is the vast assortment of automotive degree and certificate programs it has to offer.  With an associate’s degree program and eight certificate options to choose from, this school really has a lot to offer.

The associate’s in automotive technology is a 2-year program with a rotating enrollment cycle.  The curriculum includes core courses like suspension and steering, manual and automatic transmissions, fuel and ignition systems, and computer controls and is designed to help students learn skills in servicing vehicles, preventive vehicle maintenance, and troubleshooting using the state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment.

One of the highlights of the program is that students are able to participate in a work-study experience at a local dealership.  This on-site work experience, coupled with campus shop work and core technical courses, creates a comprehensive learning environment that will help students to be successful in their future careers in the automotive industry

Another caveat of BCC’s program is that it includes optional elective courses which give automotive students the opportunity to specialize.  Students have the option of taking courses in service techniques, hybrid and electric powertrain, or auto body repair, or they can opt to participate in an occupational internship program.

  • Tuition: $133 per credit hour (in-state), $178 per credit hour (out-of-state)

Delgado Community College (DCC) is the only GM ASEP college in the entire state of Louisiana, so it’s not surprising that this school caught our attention.  And, in fact, GM has really invested a lot into the automotive program at DCC.  One of the most recent donations to the campus shop at DCC included four top-line cars:  2017 Camaro, 2016 Cadillac CT6, 2013 Camaro SS, and 2015 Cadillac Escalade.  DCC also offers the Ford ASSET program for students interested in a career working on Ford vehicles.

The quality of Delgado Community College’s automotive program is absolutely top-notch.  In fact, just this year, the gold medal in Automotive Service Technology at the Louisiana SkillsUSA competition was awarded to a DCC Ford ASSET student.  That makes 2018 the sixth year in a row that a student of the Ford ASSET program at DCC has taken home the gold at the SkillsUSA competition.  But not only did DCC students walk away with the gold, they also took home the bronze and silver medals too.

DCC’s automotive program design is simple:  combine classroom-based lecture with intense hands-on training in the school’s highline motor vehicle lab and then pair that with a real-world internship experience.

In both the degree and certificate program, students choose a concentration area of study, either Collision Repair or General Automotive.  And then, students pick their specialized program, either GM ASEP or Ford ASSET.  In both programs, students are required to complete an eight-week, full-time internship each semester.  And, both manufacturers also offer online factory training as well as hands-on training at the manufacturer’s training center.

The Oklahoma State brand can also open an immensity of possibilities as its name is known and respected throughout the Midwest.

One of the benefits of an education at OSUIT is the internship program that has become a mainstay for the past two decades. Students are able to put their training to use in the final part of their education.
